This is the third year that our friends Anna and Ned will be offering their brilliantly educational and entertaining workshops at Eco Divers Resort Lembeh.

Taking part is absolutely free as Anna and Ned offer the workshops purely out of their desire to share their love of the underwater world with as many other people as possible.

They are co-authors of the best-selling series of marine identification field guides including Reef Fish Identification - Tropical Pacific and Reef Creature Identification - Tropical Pacific, and the marine life column Encounters in Alert Diver magazine, and Critter Hunt in Scuba Diving.

Come and grab a rare opportunity to spend time in the company of this hugely knowledgeable and exceptionally generous and warm couple, whilst enjoying the wonders of the Lembeh Strait. A dive holiday really doesn't get any better than this. During the days there will be underwater fish and critter hunts for the area's most celebrated species, whilst informal lectures will take place every evening after dinner.

Here's what you can expect...

Underwater Photo/Video Workshop:

  • How to capture winning marine wildlife portraits
  • Tips on getting close to elusive subjects
  • Framing your subject
  • Waiting for the right moment

Special Nightly Presentations include:

  • Cephalopod behavior: The outrageous antics of octopus, cuttlefish and squid
  • Symbiosis and Camouflage: Hiding in plain sight
  • The diverse reproductive behavior of reef fishes

We guarantee that after spending an energizing week of fun and learning with a group of like-minded friends, diving will never be the same!

  • Week 1     24-31 May 2014
  • Week 2     31 May - 7 June 2014

2013-04-05.jpgWant to learn all about underwater photography? Then there's no better place to be than at award-winning Eco Divers Resort Lembeh this September.

Wolfgang Pölzer, respected underwater photo journalist, book author and double gold medallist at the CMAS World Championship of Underwater Photography, will be running a FREE week-long underwater photography workshop: plenty of diving, discovery and underwater fun, plus nightly presentations. Dates run from 28th September to 5th October.

Wolfgang has won numerous top international prizes including gold medals at the CMAS world championship on two separate occasions: 1998 (category "Macro") and 2002 (category "wide angle") and at Antibes in 2000 (category "software image"). Born in a small town in Austria, he studied marine biology at university and over the past fifteen years has published many books and worked as freelance journalist and photographer for several diving, travel and nature magazines.

In this workshop everybody – from beginner to professional – can learn from his extensive knowledge, through nightly slide shows and also one-on-one critique sessions with individual guests. Taking part is absolutely free when guests book a 7-night package, as Wolfgang is offering his workshop purely out of his aspiration to share a love of underwater photography.

IWUPC.jpgThe Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is sponsoring an event for the first time which, in just its first year, has instantly become the largest, longest and most prestigious photo contest in the world, with a staggering total prize value of over US$200,000!

This contest is open to anyone with a camera, with prizes in 6 underwater categories and 1 conservation category, plus a Best of Show category.

Enrolment is free – to enter the competition all you have to do is dive with a Participating Dive Operator before 30 November and then submit up to 5 images in each category. Your images will then be judged by a panel of respected judges. It’s as simple as that!

Eco Divers is a Participating Dive Operator, so if you’d like to enter IWUPC 2013 please book a stay with us in Manado or Lembeh, or a combination of both if you wish to take both macro and wide-angle photos.

If you’re interested in entering IWUPC 2013, please visit the Indonesia World Underwater Photo Contest website to learn more about this amazing contest.

Last week our Resident Photo Pro, Sam Lewis of ScubaZoo, was able to capture some truly amazing video of skeleton shrimps.

If you’ve never seen a skeleton shrimp before, you should take a look – it’s may be as close to a humanoid figure as you’re ever likely to see in a marine species - like Worm Guys from the movie “Men in Black”!

Whatever you equate them to, there’s no denying that they’re a VERY strange sight and also absolutely fascinating in their behaviour. Yet another of the many reasons to dive Lembeh. Not that you really needed another reason, did you?

Thanks for this great footage, Sam!

2012-04-01.jpgFarewell, thanks and good luck in the future, Christian. Welcome, Sam Lewis! They say that time flies and that all good things must come to an end. Well, it’s true. In the past 1.5 years Christian Loader has become an integral member of the Eco Divers Family and a popular photo instructor, having helped many of our guests improve their photo skills. Those of you who follow our FB page will also have witnessed Christian’s considerable talent in photography, through his regular postings of strikingly artistic underwater images.

Now Christian’s time at Eco Divers has sadly come to an end, as ScubaZoo takes him back-to-base (in Kota Kinabalu) to take on a new role as photographer/videographer on film and book projects.

We’d like to thank Christian for his efforts. We will miss him being here, but still expect him to be a regular visitor to Eco Divers. We wish him success and happiness and look forward to seeing many of his great images and films in the future.

Replacing Christian from ScubaZoo is Sam Lewis. Sam arrived at Eco Divers this week from the Maldives, where he provided photo and video services on-board The Four Seasons Explorer Liveaboard. From the UK, Sam has a Master’s Degree in Animal Behaviour and a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, so his knowledge is not limited to taking photos or videos. He specialises in film-making and is proficient with Adobe Premier CS5 and Final Cut Pro to edit videos. Sam has a great passion for all water sports, in particular water polo. He provides photo & video services for The Digital Centre (www.digitalcentreindonesia.com) at Eco Divers Manado & Lembeh. Welcome, Sam!

ned-anna.jpgWe’re delighted that interest in our free biology workshop with world-famous Ned & Anna DeLoach has been so much that the first two weeks are both almost fully-booked. Those people lucky enough to have a confirmed place on this “Critter Hunt” are in for a treat…

Great news: Ned & Anna have agreed to extend their workshop at Eco Divers Resort Lembeh into a third week, from 16 to 23 June!! This means that 14 more places are now available. But book now, as it’s first come, first served. There definitely won’t be a fourth week, so this is really is the last chance for anyone who wants to learn all about fish behaviour to join Ned & Anna at Eco Divers Resort Lembeh. See details here: http://www.eco-divers.com/special-trips.php or just send a booking enquiry to info@eco-divers.com.
